Final Fantasy VII NFT Project to Honor the Game’s 25th Anniversary
One of the longest-running and most beloved video game series of all time is getting the NFT treatment.
Today, software platform Enjin and well-known video game company Square Enix announced the upcoming launch of a collectible set of digital cards and figures inspired by “Final Fantasy VII,” the iconic 1997 RPG, according to a recent press release.
Enjiin, a software platform that lets developers create their own NFTs on Ethereum and integrate them into games and apps, and Square Enix, the company behind the famous game, are releasing the collection in honor of the game’s 25th anniversary.
The release will take place on Efinity, which Enjin bills as its next-generation cross-chain network for NFTs built on the Polkadot blockchain.
But to access the NFTs, collectors will first have to purchase items in the release’s corresponding physical collection, which will launch sometime in 2023. Fans can preorder those commemorative action figures starting today at the Square Enix Store.
This physical product will come with a code that can be redeemed for a digital version of the figure. Preorders for the trading cards will go live sometime later in 2022.
Square Enix will manage the drop with the Open Enjin Platform, using NFT.io and Enjin Wallet as the non-exclusive and secondary marketplace and wallet for users, and Enjin Beam for its QR code NFT distribution system.
“This partnership marks a coming-of-age phase for digital assets and entertainment; Square Enix, an esteemed developer with iconic intellectual property, is paving the way for the industry,” explained Enjin CTO Witek Radomski in the press release. “By using Efinity, fans can experience interactive NFTs without even realizing they’re on the blockchain. Enjin can establish the next phase of growth in blockchain entertainment, merging curiosity and creativity.”
Final Fantasy is one of the highest-selling video game franchises in history, with an average of 2.67 million sales per title release. That’s more than the franchises of Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Witcher, and Super Mario have achieved in their runs. Final Fantasy VII, on its own, has sold 13.1 million units during its long run. An episodic DMC remake of the game is nearing its next phase of release, in 2023.
