Beeple & Ryan Zurrer on How CryptoPunks Changed the Concept of Online Identity
In the 12th episode of “Punks As Told By CryptoPunks,” the docuseries jointly presented by nft now and CryptoPunks, we are joined for an insightful conversation among friends with digital art pioneer Beeple (Mike Winkelmann) and celebrated collector, Ryan Zurrer (founder of Dialetic). Live from the Punk MeetUp at Beeple’s studio in Charleston, they delve into the transformative nature of NFTs, discussing Beeple’s unique approach to digital art, the impact of CryptoPunks in his work, and the evolving concept of online identity.
Beeple and Zurrer discuss how digital platforms are redefining artistic expression and community engagement in the digital age. ‘Punks As Told By CryptoPunks’ is an intimate chronicle of CryptoPunks, expanding upon the ongoing archival work of the upcoming Punks book, told through weekly episodes of unfiltered conversations and behind-the-scenes moments.
Beeple tells Zurrer that CryptoPunks was one of the first projects he heard about in late 2020, and it massively changed how he thinks about art.
“It was such a radically new idea for art, that it was just so exciting to me, and such a crazy thing,” Beeple said. “I mean, none of us would be here, I wouldn’t be here without this project; I mean, these are the guys that pretty much wrote the book for what an NFT is, so again, like, I owe a ridiculous amount to their work and seeing what has come from it is crazy, it’s insane.”
“I mean, none of us would be here, I wouldn’t be here without [CryptoPunks].”
Beeple
Zurrer agrees and sheds light on how CryptoPunks have become a means of communicating online identity. He emphasizes the significance of punk traits that resonate with individuals, whether by resembling them or representing an aspirational digital identity.
Zurrer then delved into the intriguing world of CryptoPunks’ sub-communities, highlighting the “Hoodie punks” as a prime example. He shared insights into the sub-communities that had sprung up within CryptoPunks, with a particular focus on the highly coveted “Hoodie punks.”
“The hoodie trait,” Zurrer explained, “is a fairly common one, but it holds substantial value and is now considered quite expensive. This is because the hoodie punk community consists of serious players.”
Beeple chimed in, emphasizing the remarkable strength of communities formed around seemingly commonplace traits.
Zurrer agreed, “That originality bred authenticity, and then the authenticity has bred the strength of the community around it, right? Like, this was not done as a money-making scheme.”
Originality Breeding Authenticity
Discussing the impact of CryptoPunks and its unique community on his own approach and vision for community-building, Beeple shared profound insights.
“I think the passion that you see around the project and the true belief and understanding of its historical relevance, I think, really sets it apart from a lot of the other communities that don’t have that. They’re brand new IP and, to be honest, most of the IP is, again, based on the concept of Cryptopunks.”
Beeple reflects on a recent CryptoPunks brunch event in Korea, where the overwhelming passion and belief in the project’s historical significance left a lasting impression. He underscores that CryptoPunks stands apart from other communities due to its deep-rooted authenticity and understanding of its historical relevance. Unlike newer IP projects, CryptoPunks is the foundation upon which much of the NFT space has been built.
Beeple and Zurrer agree that CryptoPunks was born out of a pure love for creation. Beeple emphasizes that CryptoPunks was given away for free, without royalties or expectations, making it remarkably resilient and immune to criticism.
As they delve into the past, Beeple and Zurrer reminisce about the early days when NFTs were in their infancy. They marvel at the innovative spirit that surrounded CryptoPunks, where the creators had to forge their own marketplace because NFTs had yet to become a recognized concept.
Beeple’s final remark encapsulates the sentiment shared by many in the NFT space: “The amount of innovation,” Beeple said. “People are still sleeping on it.”
CryptoPunks, in all its authenticity, laid the foundation for an NFT revolution that continues to evolve and redefine the digital landscape.
