Greg Solano & Chris Lyons on How CryptoPunks are Shaping the Future of Digital Communities
In the most recent installment of “Punks As Told By CryptoPunks,” the docuseries jointly presented by nft now and CryptoPunks, we reconnect with Greg Solano of Yuga Labs and Chris Lyons of a16z. Together, they delve into the profound influence of CryptoPunks on shaping digital identity, while sharing their endeavors in championing diversity and accessibility in the realm of technology.
‘Punks As Told By CryptoPunks’ offers an intimate exploration of the CryptoPunks narrative, complementing the ongoing archival work of the upcoming Punks book. This exploration unfolds through weekly episodes featuring candid discussions and behind-the-scenes insights.
Greg Solano, a co-founder of Yuga Labs, and Chris Lyons, the President of Web3 Media at a16z, provide unique perspectives on their CryptoPunks journey. Lyons mentioned that he decided to enter the CryptoPunks arena in 2021, having heard about them and other early NFT projects like CryptoKitties. He observed, “I believe CryptoPunks was the first project where you could find one that resonated with you on a personal level. The idea was to have a Punk that truly represented me, one I could tell a story about.”
He emphasized the significance of not only the profile picture (PFP) aspect but also the broader goal of onboarding the next hundred million people into the world of NFTs. Lyons shared his perspective on the gold chain trait within the CryptoPunks, highlighting its cultural symbolism. “A gold chain usually depreciates, but in CryptoPunks, it appreciates. The chain symbolizes culture and community.”

Greg Solano touched upon his personal history, recounting how his grandparents fled Cuba with almost nothing. His grandmother, an elementary school teacher, emphasized the importance of education, stating that what resides in one’s mind is something no one can take away. Solano drew a parallel to the world of crypto, where you can securely hold your assets through a seed phrase, emphasizing the power of self-custody in today’s digital age.
“Rather than like leaving Cuba with just the clothes on their back, you know, in today’s day and age, that might look something more like storing 18 words in your brain,” Solano said. “And then being able to like to access your wallet from anywhere in the world.”

The conversation also touched on the unexpected move by Yuga Labs to acquire CryptoPunks and Meebits in 2022. Solano expressed that he saw it as a strategic and substantial step forward, aligning the community even more closely with Yuga Labs. This acquisition marked the beginning of a transformative journey, with subsequent moves elevating the standards in the crypto world.
Solano added that the acquisition caught many by surprise, including themselves, but the most exciting aspect was the opportunity to provide clarity regarding intellectual property rights for Punk owners. This initiative aimed to empower Punk owners and serve as responsible stewards of the Punk community’s future.
“I think the thing that was most exciting for us, was we knew what could we do here,” Solano said. “Like, what if we gave everyone the license to their IP which is something that was really important in the Punks community at the time, something that we felt like we could take on and do that would be in the proper stewardship of Punks into the future.”
Ultimately, they believed that if Punks succeeded, it would benefit everyone in the Web3 space, making it a collective win.
Lyons and Solano conclude the talk by discussing the significance of the Web3 community and how CryptoPunks is contributing to its future.
Lyons says Punks are creating a digital space where individuals, regardless of their familiarity with each other, can come together and offer support, whether it’s daily statistics, insightful threads on crypto and NFTs, or discussions about the future, these individual contributions continually enrich the collective.
“I think that we’re at a point in our life where now we need equal parts physical and digital to work together. Whether it’s talking about crypto or whether it’s talking about everyday life and humanity and situations, but I think that the energy and the behavior is super important.”

This collaborative and evolving dynamic not only fosters a sense of belonging but also fuels a dialectic that propels CryptoPunks into the future, shaped by the collective efforts and insights of its members. It’s a testament to the power of digital communities in shaping the future of interaction and collaboration.
