Let’s face it: The NFT space moves really fast. Considering how quickly things can change in the metaverse, a week in NFTs might as well be a month IRL.
Don’t get us wrong — the more people onboarded into the space, the merrier. But the constant influx of great art and new ideas makes it increasingly difficult to keep up with all the news, launches, and general happenings.
Well, you can put the days of endless Twitter and Discord scrolling behind you, as we put together a weekly list of upcoming NFT drops you definitely don’t want to miss. Here’s what to look out for this week.
Sky’s the Limit: the Notorious B.I.G. NFT collection
What: Generative PFP NFT collection + license for a legendary Biggie freestyle
When: July 26 @ 1 p.m. ET
Why: Nearly three decades after his untimely passing, the Notorious B.I.G. is still widely celebrated as one of the greatest rappers to ever do it. In celebration of his life and body of work, the green NFT platform OneOf is coordinating the launch of the Sky’s the Limit NFT collection. The collection is set to feature a generative PFP collection of the rap legend, and voting rights to decide the fate of one of Biggie’s most legendary freestyles. Yes — that one. All holders of NFTs from this collection gain membership rights to the Sky’s the Limit Collective, which will decide as a group which artists will have the opportunity to sample or remix the freestyle into an official, community-backed release.
What: 5,000 utility-enabled audio-visual NFTs
When: July 27 @ 2 p.m. EDT
Why: Warner Records UK has come together with legacy audio brand Bose to release a collection of 5,000 utility-enabled, audio-visual NFTs — for free. In addition to hosting this free mint for interested collectors, owners of these NFTs will also gain full creative and commercial rights to use them as they see fit. To accompany the launch of this collection, Bose is also giving away unique, limited edition Stickmen Toys-themed headphones and Bluetooth speakers for owners of these NFTs, along with planned merchandise also redeemable for free in the future.
The Lepidopterror Collection
Who: Maxim (the Prodigy)
What: 888 still images of four different butterflies
When: July 27, time TBA
Why: British artist Maxim, best known for his work as part of pioneering electronic music group The Prodigy, is launching Lepidopterror — a new NFT collection — this week, allowing fans to experience the visual side of his artistic expression. The collection, created in collaboration with innovative NFT platform Snowcrash, will contain 888 still images of butterflies of varying rarities. One hundred fifty of the butterflies in the collection will be demarcated into unique categories, with the remaining 738 butterflies marked as “Citizens.”
Who: Patrick Hughes
What: Collection mechanics TBA
When: July 27 @ 6:30 p.m. ET
Why: British artist Patrick Hughes’ six-decade-spanning art career is about to take a new turn via his upcoming NFT art collection. This upcoming collection titled Reverspectives is named after Hughes’ unique three-dimensional perspective paintings. When viewed head-on, these paintings look like any other perspectival painting. However, these paintings suddenly take on a three-dimensional appearance with a subtle change in viewing angle. With this in mind, experiencing these works digitally makes perfect sense.
Festival of Gratitude
What: Slices from a host of “very special” virtual birthday cakes
When: July 28 @ 10 a.m. ET
Why: Artist Walid Raad has prepared a virtual feast for a few of the most infamous world leaders from modern history, starting with birthday cakes for Hugo Chávez, King Abdullah, and Vladimir Putin. Sales from this upcoming collection will go towards nonprofit organizations curated by Raad himself — most notably Endaoment’s Support Ukrainian Sovereignty fund via sales of the collection’s Putin cake.
Brinkman x Caldwell x Transient Labs
What: A one-of-one NFT that can be shattered into 16 variants
When: July 29, time TBA
Why: Bryan Brinkman and Rich Caldwell, two of the most respected voices in the NFT art scene, have come together to deliver community members a truly unique piece to add to their collection. This work, dropping on Friday, is slated to take advantage of Transient Labs’ new smart contract mechanic; Shatter. As such, the one-of-one NFTs eventual owner will be faced with a decision upon acquiring the piece: do they hodl, sell, gift, or shatter the piece to create 17 news NFTs in the process?
