Behind the Drop: Sotheby’s London Contemporary Art Day Auction
As the NFT ecosystem has grown and developed, Sotheby’s has continued to be a champion of bridging the gap between the digital and traditional art worlds. Sotheby’s London recently held its Contemporary Art Day Auction, tapping multidisciplinary artist ThankYouX to help curate Physical/Digital: A Modern Diptych.
When it comes to blurring the lines between physical and digital art, ThankYouX has a wealth of experience. As a “traditional” artist (painter, designer) turned crypto-art maximalist, he jumped at the opportunity to bring in some of the most influential crypto artists in the NFT community.
“When Michael [Bouhanna] from Sotheby’s asked me to co-curate this auction, I knew immediately who I wanted to bring,” ThankYouX tells nft now. “The first two people I hit up were FEWOCiOUS and Victor Mosquera. And being that it was a physical/digital diptych, I also reached out to Cory Van Lew, who I thought was a perfect person for it.”
In addition to FEWO, ThankYouX, Mosquera and Van Lew, pieces from prominent digital artists Hackatao, Osean, Justin Roiland and more were included in the physical/digital diptych.

In addition to having their NFTs on display via digital frames, FEWOCiOUS, ThankYouX, Van Lew and others also provided physical pieces to present alongside their non-fungible offerings.
“My specific stance in the space is actually trying to bridge that gap [between physical and digital],” ThankYouX tells nft now. The seasoned artist says it was important for him to get the point across by way of his co-curation that the distinction between physical and digital, when it comes to NFTs, is unnecessary.
Possibly the most notable of these pieces was FEWOCiOUS’ Mr. MiSUNDERSTOOD, a life-size sculpture complete with hand-painted suit. FEWOCiOUS said via his artist statement that this particular piece is about his future and looking forward into the next chapter of his life as an artist.
”It’s a sculpture about being myself,” FEWOCiOUS tells nft now. “The sculpture shows Mr. MiSUNDERSTOOD in grass, and he’s like, ‘I want to see the sun. I want to fly with other people.’”
