Victor Mosquera on Crafting an Authentic Style and Supportive Community
Incorporating throwback psychedelia and sci-fi influences with elements of graphic design, Victor Mosquera’s work is uniquely his own. The Colombian-born and Vancouver-based artist’s distinctive style is largely defined by themes of life and the mind after death, as well as a dominating sense of color. Since his first drop in November of 2020, Mosquera has sold over $500,000 in NFTs, according to CryptoArt.io.
Speaking on the nft now podcast, Mosquera recalls how he was initially drawn to the NFT space through friends and collaborators. Having previously worked with artists like ODESZA in their Foreign Family Collective, Mosquera had established himself as a print and graphic artist within the music industry before he began making NFTs. After seeing artist and friend FVCKRENDER post about NFTs on Twitter, Mosquera was intrigued.
“As soon as I understood the concept of blockchain, I just couldn’t help seeing how that echoes like life in general,” he says..
This connection served as the inspiration behind his first Nifty Gateway drop, Everything Connected. From the community network supporting blockchain technology and NFTs, to environmental networks that keep our planet alive, blockchain echoed the ethos of his previous works.
Though the NFT space has become increasingly saturated, Mosquera has highlighted the importance of scarcity through his own works. Translating his own creative process from print to digital, he starts each piece with an idea. The medium, he says, comes later.
His works consistently feature a prominent face motif – “the healers” – representative of his exploration of spirituality. Within his “Everything Connected” series, his “initial statement in this NFT world,” the healers connected themes of life and death, and visual and audio elements. For each piece, he mixed African drums with South American flutes to create a global connection. He even combined additional drums from Japan with scenes from Europe and the United States for an audio representation of blockchain technology’s collective network.
His message of interconnectivity has clearly resonated within the community – Mosquera is currently set to be featured in the second offering of Christie’s Trespassing auctions.
As Mosquera explains, his success within NFTs has been largely thanks to the community he found when he first began researching the space. Although he was initially daunted by the idea of another social media platform to keep track of and participate in, he decided to enter Clubhouse to learn more about NFTs. Since then, the platform has been an essential meeting point for creating an organic community, as well as friendships with fellow artists.
“One thing that I liked was the concept that it felt exclusive in a way that is not gatekeeping,” he said. “It’s only very exclusive in the way that it is awesome people talking about awesome stuff.”
Most of all, Mosquera is excited to see where the space grows from here. Past the initial hype of people getting in on NFTs because of the money, he views the space as the perfect environment for amazing artists to emerge.
“I’m just waiting for life on earth after this thing for creative people,” he adds. “What a time to be alive!”
